Job Summary This position is under the direct or indirect supervision of a Pathologist. Assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical-specimen dissections for microscopic examination, special procedures and biospecimen banking. Performs human postmortem examinations, and assists the Pathologists in the implementation and monitoring of the Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement Program in Anatomic Pathology.
Job Duties
- Assists the Pathologist in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection and performs human postmortem examinations.
- Obtains pertinent clinical information and history, laboratory data, x-rays, and scans, and assess legal authorizations for autopsies.
- Describes gross anatomic features and dissection of surgical specimens and the postmortem prosection including the external examination, in situ organ inspection, evisceration and dissection.
- Prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for routine histologic processing and intraoperative procedures such as frozen section, touch and squash preparation Triages biological samples such as tissue, blood and toxicological material tissues for special procedures including, control assays, electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, genetic studies, bacterial and viral cultures, image analysis, immunohistochemistry and other special techniques as directed by the Pathologist.
- Obtains and processes tissues for BioSpecimen Banking as required.
- Photographs all pertinent specimens as directed by the Pathologist.
- Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.
- Assists the Pathologist Assistant Team Lead in overseeing the Surgical Pathology Techs and the Pathology Resident Training.
- Assists in orientation of all new employees and identifies training needs to ensure that employees are performing their assigned job responsibilities.
- Assists in the organization and coordination of Anatomic Pathology Conferences.

Geisinger Medical Laboratories is seeking a full-time Pathologist Assistant to join us in our laboratory in Danville, PA. This position is a full-time role expected to work 40 hours per week.
We are a team of 42 pathologists, 5 full- time PA's, and 7 full-time Surgical Pathology Technicians. This position is in our centralized Surgical Pathology Lab that supports 9 hospitals with a total annual case load of 95,000 surgical cases and 30 autopsies.
As an academic teaching facility associated with a residency program, dermatopathology fellowship, and medical school, there are residents, fellows, and students that interact with professional staff which offers the chance for our Pathologist Assistants to teach.
We have a newly constructed, state-of-the-art, open-concept laboratory with Mopec down draft adjustable grossing stations; each plumbed with formalin faucets and drains, Voicebrook dictation system, Cerner CoPath Plus, EPIC, cassette engravers at each grossing station, robotic specimen storage and retrieval system, and customized grossing station software developed under the direction of our Pathologist Assistants.

Anatomic Pathology Scholars Program - New Graduate or less than 3 years of experience
- The program awards up to $50,000 in financial support with a five-year work commitment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A candidate/graduate of an American Association of Pathologist Assistants (AAPA)/NAACLS educational program. ASCP certification eligibility required.
PA (ASCP) must be obtained within one year of hire.
